The British Council in Ukraine is the preferred partner of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in training of English language teachers within the “New Ukrainian School” reform of secondary education. The first training will be delivered to teachers of foreign languages from 100 pilot schools from all regions of Ukraine volunteered to be the first schools to launch the educational reform.
The British Council has worldwide expertise in the implementation of large-scale educational reform and teacher development programmes, and brings this expertise and experience to support the Ministry of Education and Science in Ukraine. For the New Ukrainian School reform, the British Council is working closely with Cambridge English to ensure the best-in-class training for English teachers of young learners. The British Council and Cambridge English are recognised as global leaders in English language teaching, bringing immense experience, modern methodology and state-of-the-art educational materials to English language education reform in Ukraine.
200 teachers of English from 100 Ukrainian schools participating in the New Ukrainian School Pilot Project, as well as 25 methodists from INSETT institutions, will receive a 40-hour intensive training programme in Bila Tserkva from 18 to 23 August 2017. British Council trainers will focus on the methodology of teaching English to young learners in grade 1, while Cambridge English will focus on providing an orientation to the new teaching resources. The training programme will also welcome the core team developing the new curriculum for language learning in the New Ukrainian School reform. Their presence ensures important continuity and consistency between the curriculum, the methodology and the teaching and learning resources. On Wednesday 23 August, at 12:00, a closing ceremony will award the teachers with certificates, attended by representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science and of the British Council in Ukraine.
2017 marks the launch of a pilot of New Ukrainian Schools with the participation of 100 schools representing each region of Ukraine. These schools applied online for the pilot and were selected by the Ministry. In 2018-2019, after adopting the new Law of Education, the New Ukrainian School reform will expand to all 17,088 schools in Ukraine. “Communication in foreign languages” was identified to be as one of the 10 key competencies of new educational standards of the New Ukrainian School, and is based on recommendations of the European Parliament and of the European Council. Within the pilot programme in 2017 teachers of German and French languages will be trained by the Goethe Institute and the Embassy of France in Ukraine.
