"Taking the Stage" is an annual theatrical competition that provides Ukrainian theatres and directors with the opportunity to produce artistically original and socially relevant performances with the support of theatre experts from the United Kingdom.
The programme is conducted by the British Council in partnership with leading British theatres. In 2017, we enjoyed the support of the YoungVic (London), Sherman Cymru (Cardiff, Wales) and Blind Summit (London) theatres. In Ukraine, the programme is managed in close cooperation with the Teatralna Platform cultural organisation.
Since its launch, “Taking the Stage” has applied the support it receives from the British Council to stage eight performances in Ukraine:
"Knives in Hens" by David Harrower, directed by Olga Turutya-Prasolova, at the chamber stage of the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre.
"The Winter’s Tale" by William Shakespeare, directed by Evhen Khudzyk, at the Lviv Les Kurbas Academic Theatre. The scenography for this performance was designed by 2015 finalist for the UK’s Linbury Prize, Minglu Wang, who subsequently displayed her stage design at the World Stage Design Forum in Taipei, June 2017.
"Gods Are Fallen and All Safety Gone" by Selma Dimitrijevic, directed by Kira Malynina, at the Laboratory Theatre, Kharkiv.
"Lungs" by Duncan McMillan, directed by Eugene Merzlyakov, Luhansk Regional Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre, Severodonetsk.
"Under the Blue Sky ..." by David Eldridge, directed by Tamara Trunova, Kyiv National Operetta Theatre.
"Lungs" by Duncan McMillan, directed by Dmitro Zakhozhenko, at the New Drama Theatre on Pechersk, Kyiv.
"Gods Are Fallen and All Safety Gone" by Selma Dimitrijevic, directed by Victoria Filonchuk, at the Chernihiv Taras Shevchenko Musical Drama Theatre.
