The British Council and Wales Arts International are supporting a residency for an artist from Ukraine at Aberystwyth Arts Centre in Wales, UK. The residency is part of the British Council’s Artist Residency Programme for artists whose lives and work have been affected by war, conflict, displacement or political instability.

A brief overview

  • Host: Aberystwyth Arts Centre, part of Aberystwyth University, Wales
  • Number of places: one
  • Duration: four to five weeks
  • Dates: between January and March 2027, agreed with the successful applicant
  • Who it is for: mid-career artists working in the performing arts, with a focus on the written word (playwrights) and/or dance (choreographers, directors)

About the host

Aberystwyth Arts Centre is part of Aberystwyth University and overlooks Cardigan Bay on the west coast of Wales. It is one of the largest venues in Wales and presents arts events and activities throughout the year.

The town is home to the National Library of Wales and the Welsh Books Council, and the area has been awarded UNESCO City of Literature status. The Arts Centre can connect artists with local writers, academics, community groups and institutions across Wales. For dance artists, it can make its dance studios and rehearsal spaces available and introduce them to dance groups and companies across the country.

What the residency offers

The Arts Centre will arrange accommodation and workspace, give practical support and introduce the artist to local artists and communities. No specific outcome or final project is expected. The aim is to give you the time and support to concentrate on what matters most for your work.

The programme includes funding for accessibility support, childcare and wellbeing needs. Please tell us in your application about anything that would help you take part fully. Your answer will not affect how your application is assessed.

Who can apply

We are looking for artists from Ukraine who work in playwriting and/or dance, have experience in their field and are active in their communities, creative networks or cultural life.

How to apply

Apply by 24 November 2026 through the British Council’s grant platform: Ukrainian Artist Residency in Wales. The application form is in English. You can download a sample form on the platform to prepare your answers in advance. If you are new to GoodGrants, this video explains how to use it.

Submitting an application does not guarantee a place. Decisions are based on the strength of the application and how well artist and host match.
